Machynlleth (“Mach”) is about 5 miles away – about a 10 minute drive by car. It's the local market town and ancient Capital of Wales, with a large Co-op supermarket, petrol station, pubs, cafés, independent shops and a regular Wednesday market.

Yes — Cardigan Bay's wonderful open sandy beaches at Ynyslas are a short drive west, the lovely harbour village and beach of Aberdyfi is just across the Dyfi estuary, and Snowdonia (Eryri) National Park are close by to the north. Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) itself is over an hour away to the north of Wales, but still worth a day visit. A closer and far quieter big mountain climb is Cadair Idris, just 25 minutes drive from us.

Up to 8 guests. The barn has 3 full bedrooms – a large double bedroom in the apex, a ground floor double bedroom, and a smaller bedroom ideal for children, with a single bed and a pull-out bed. Finally there is a double bedroom on the mezzanine level above the living room, with a curtain for privacy.

Yes — it's entirely off-grid, powered with electricity generated on-site by solar panels and a wind turbine. It was converted in 2003 and is believed to be the first zero-carbon dwelling in Wales and the first zero-carbon barn conversion in the UK.

Power is available throughout the year from the combination of solar and wind generation, but since there's no mains supply, electrical appliances are kept to a minimum — just don't expect the same level of power-hungry gadgets you might find in a mains-connected cottage. Heating is provided by solid fuels.

By a wood-burning stove, with firewood provided, comibined with the super-insulation and passive solar design (south-facing windows) that help the barn warm up quickly and stay warm.

Yes, for self-catering there’s a full kitchen with an LPG double gas oven and gas hob, a fridge, and all cooking and tableware provided, set in a double-height open-plan kitchen-diner with oak flooring and exposed stone walls. There's also an outdoor barbecue provided.

Two: a ground-floor bathroom with shower, WC and basin, and a second bathroom with a sunken bath (with valley views), WC and basin.

The barn gets good 3G/4G mobile signal on most networks. Part of the appeal of being off-grid is the opportunity to disconnect from screen time and gadgets, to connect with one another and nature. There's no Wi-Fi in the barn, but you can rediscover the fun of board games, books and a wind-up radio, provided as off-grid entertainment.

Yes — up to 3 pets are welcome at £10 per pet. Due to the rural nature, dogs must be kept on a lead in the surrounding fields and farm.

Yes, children are welcome, and a baby cot and highchair are provided — you won't need to bring your own.

Machynlleth's Wednesday market, shops, cafés, pubs and a Co-op are close by, along with the Centre for Alternative Technology, Corris Craft Centre and King Arthur's Labyrinth. The coast at Aberdyfi, Tywyn, Ynyslas and Borth are within reach to the west, and Bala (fishing, whitewater rafting) lies to the east. The Dyfi Valley and Snowdonia National Park to the north are packed with walking trails and stunning scenery.
